All About Vitamins: Pantothenic acid in Neuro Degenerative Risk

By Kyle J. Norton.

Vitamin B5 is also known as pantothenic acid, played an important role in the forming of co-enzyme A and critical in the metabolism and synthesis of carbohydrates, proteins and fat. Vitamin B5 has a chemical structure formula of C9H17NO5.

Deprivation of pantothenic acid (PA; vitamin B5) may associate to the early onset of neurodegenerative disease, a study bu renowned university suggested.

In a study of Wild-type and Pank2 mutant mice fed pantothenic acid-deficient diets monitored for general health, fertility and movement and compared with animals on control diets over time, showed a significant effect in manifested azoospermia (a phenotype also seen in Pank2 mice) and exhibited movement disorder with a low-lying pelvis and slow steps.

Mice fed with vitamin B5 deficit diet also effect the physical movement of the limbs caused by muscular spasm and abnormal posture in both mice groups.

According to the University of California, the result of the testing indicated that vitamin B5 deficiency may express the similar expression in neuro degernerative effect as seen in the inherited neurological disorder PKAN (pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration formerly called Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome)

Further more, in the study of a mouse knock-out of the orthologous murine gene (Pank2) to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms of disease and serve as a testing ground for therapies, researchers found that overtime, murine mice manifest retinal degeneration,   progressive photoreceptor decline, decreased cell number and disruption of the outer segment and reduced pupillary constriction response.

More interestingly, in compared to wild type, experiment mice showed a significantly ameliorated fertility in displayed a condition of no sperm semen.

The reduced fertility and physical move and retinal degeneration caused by vitamin B5 deficiency
demonstrated a similarity to in the inherited neurological disorder PKAN (pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration formerly called Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome) cause ofvitamin B5 deficit, therefore, vitamin B5 may be considered as a therapeutic supplemnt in reduced risk neuro degenerative disease caused by acute vitamin B5 deficiency individuals.
