All About Vitamins: Niacin in Inhibited Inflammatory Expression

By Kyle J. Norton.

Niacin, is also known as vitamin B3, nicotinic acid, an organic compound with the formula
C6H5NO2, found abundantly in chicken, beef, fish, cereal, peanuts and legumes. It is best known for its effects in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides and removing toxic from our body and promoting production of steroid hormones.

Inflammation is a natural response of immune system in protection of our body against foreign invasion and prevent further damage to injured or damage body's tissues and organs. Over expression of immunity in this case may cause complications if not under controlled.

Niacin is found to inhibit inflammatory expression through its anti-nociceptive activity, a renowned institutes joint study suggested.

According to the Universidade de São Paulo, nicotinic acid (Hnic) and its isomer isonicotinic acid (ina) activated ligands (L) from niacin displayed anti inflammatory effect in inhibition of mechanical hyperalgesia induced by prostaglandin E2, carrageenan, a common food additive and antigen-induced arthritis.

Furthermore, in animal study, mice induced inflammation by formalin.fed with nicotinic acid (250, 500 or 1000 mg/kg, -1 h) showed a significant effect in demonstrated anti the first and the second phases of the nociceptive response against pain expression.
At dose (250 or 500 mg/kg, -1 and 3 h) nicotinic acid also displayed a decreased mechanical allodynia in triggering pain response from stimuli which provoke pain induced by carrageenan, in rat model.

Additionally, besides reduced inflammatory activity against pain, nicotinic acid (250 or 500 mg/kg, p.o., -1 and 3 h) also expressed an ameliorated paw edema caused by carrageenan.

Dr. Godin AM, the lead author said, " our results represent the first demonstration of the activity of nicotinic acid in experimental models of nociceptive and inflammatory pain and also provide further support to its anti-inflammatory activity. It is unlikely that conversion to nicotinamide represents an important mechanism to explain the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of nicotinic acid".

Taking together, nicotinic acid, a drug that has already been approved for clinical use with a positive safety record to treat high cholesterol and heart disease , may be used as anti inflammatory agent in reduced complications caused over reaction of immunity.
