All About Vitamins: Niacin, A Potent Anti Acne Vitamin

By Kyle J. Norton.

Niacin, is also known as vitamin B3, nicotinic acid, an organic compound with the formula
C6H5NO2, found abundantly in chicken, beef, fish, cereal, peanuts and legumes. It is best known for its effects in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides and removing toxic from our body and promoting production of steroid hormones.

Niacin and its derivatives may have a potential effect used over counter medicine for treatment of acne, a joint study led by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. suggested.

In the review of database from PubMed for clinical studies, using nicotinamide for treatment of acne vulgaris, including 10 studies met search criteria, in compared to baseline or other standard-of-care acne treatment, 6 out of 8 studies expressed the positive effect of topical nicotinamide in reduction in acne.

Oral supplement containing nicotinamide from other studies showed a significantly improved  reduction in acne in compared with baseline.

Either topical and oral administration showed no major adverse side effects, the study also found.

Other in a randomized, double-blind clinical trial, patients with moderate inflammatory facial acne vulgaris randomly allocated to receive either topical 4% nicotinamide (n = 40) or 1% clindamycin gels (n = 40) twice daily, group treated with topical 4% nicotinamide showed an  acne grade decreased from an average of 5.93 at baseline to 4.03 at week 4 and 2.08 at week 8 in compared to
5.70 at baseline to 3.85 at week 4 and 2.03 at week 8 in the clindamycin group.

Further consultation insisted that skin types of patients may play an important role in choosing products as nicotinamide and clindamycin gels were significantly more efficacious in oily and non-oily skin types, respectively.

Both products showed insignificantly adverse side effects during the course of study.

Due to the limited nature of the available literature, some researchers suggested that additional studies are needed in comparing nicotinamide to other first-line acne treatments over an extended period of time may be necessary.
