All About Vitamins: Niacin Overload in increased Risk of Obesity

By Kyle J. Norton.

Niacin, is also known as vitamin B3, nicotinic acid, an organic compound with the formula
C6H5NO2, found abundantly in chicken, beef, fish, cereal, peanuts and legumes. It is best known for its effects in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides and removing toxic from our body and promoting production of steroid hormones.

Chronic niacin excessive intake may be associated to risk of obesity a study by the Medical College, Dalian University suggested.

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat has accumulated overtime with a BMI of over 30.
According to the statistic, 68% of American population are either overweight or obese.

According to the examine between the niacin consumption and the obesity prevalence among US children using the data from the Economic Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture and from US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, respectively, increased consumption of grain niacin-fortification and fortified ready-to-eat cereal consumption, with a 10-year lag increased per capita niacin consumption among Us children may be one of the risk factor in elevated obese risk.

Dr. Li D, the lead author said, " The regression analyses showed that the obesity prevalence in the US children of all age groups was determined by niacin consumption (R(2) = 0.814, 0.961 and 0.94 for 2-5 years, 6-11 years and 12-19 years age groups, respectively)".

In deed, the appetite-stimulating effect of nicotinamide involved oxidative stress may be directly induced excess niacin consumption and considered as a major factor in the increased obesity prevalence in US children.

Additionally, in the study to determine whether and how long-term treatment with nicotinamide) NAM at lower dose would affect insulin sensitivity in mice fed chow diet with NAM (100 mg/kg/day) and normal chow for 8 weeks, researchers found that NAM (100 mg/kg/day) injection group induced obesity and expressed a significant in increased glucose intolerance and skeletal muscle lipid accumulation through impaired mitochondrial respiration capacity and energy production in skeletal muscle.

The excessive niacin overload also showed a persistent rate of oxidative stress in compared to high-fat diet (HFD) and resveratrol (RSV; 100 mg/kg/day) group.

Taking together, there is no doubt that niacin overload may have a direct influence to increased risk of obesity through expression of oxidative stress induced increased glucose intolerance and skeletal muscle lipid accumulation
