Vitamin B1 is one of the members of the vitamin B complex, it is also known as thiamin or thiamine. It's most common form is a colorless chemical compound with the formula C12H17N4OS. It was discovered in 1910 by Umetaro Suzuki in Japan. It is a water soluble vitamin, therefore it can be stored in the body and is required to be taken regularly.

Vitamin B1 or thiamine deficiency is found to associated to high risk of over 50% in heart failure (HF).

According to the cross-sectional study was conducted in 30 HF patients scheduled for regular follow-up visits in the Mayo Heart Failure Clinic, the prevalence of thiamine deficiency in stable HF patients was calculated to be <11.6%.. High doses of thiamine supplementation improved myocardial function and may be become conditionally essential with HF.

In a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis to evaluate the prevalence of thiamine deficiency (TD) in HF patients, TD is more common in HF patients than control subjects (odds ratio 2.53, 95% confidence interval 1.65-3.87) and intake of vitamin B1 of these patients are found to associate to improve ejection fraction and reduce symptoms.
Dr. Jain A, the lead author of the study said, " Thiamine deficiency is more prevalent in the HF population, and its supplementation may be beneficial".

Furthermore, intake of thiamine supplement also attenuated symptoms of  increased urine volume and urinary flow rate. in patients with heart failure, through increasing left ventricular ejection fraction and improving functional capacity.

There is no doubt that oral  thiamine supplement may be a potential agent in managing the symptoms and complication of patients with heart failure, but quantity of the vitamin should only be prescribed by your doctor after a blood test.
